STAY CONNECTED WITH TWIINS

Riding a motorcycle is typically a solitary experience - it can be a great way to clear your head and get your thoughts together, akin to a form of two-wheeled meditation. But if you've got a passenger, or you're riding with another biker, it's likely you'll want to talk to them.

Yes, some riders travel alone in order to get away from everything - but in our technologically advanced and obsessed world, most people will still require some form of communication, navigation, or even a bit of music along the way. And that's where motorcycle intercom systems come in.

Bike It Motorcycle Visor Rain Repellent

Bike It's motorcycle visor rain repellent

RRP: £6.99
Tested by: Mau Spencer

As bike riders, we all know how our visibility can be impaired by the rain that gathers on your visor and impairs your vision - and this can be worrying, especially at night; so this handy little aerosol spray could be the answer to your problems - offering miles of clear visor riding from a single application.

Coming in a handy-sized 75ml can, you just spray it on a soft cloth and then apply a thin layer to your visor to create a non-stick coating which has the effect of forcing the rain to bead and run off aerodynamically while you're riding.

The spray can is small enough to just poke into your pocket (or to place under the seat of your motorcycle or scooter) so that it is always to hand if you get caught in a downpour and your visor needs recoating.

If you put in regular miles in the UK, this clever spray could make getting caught in a downpour a little less painful.

We know the importance of taking good care of our motorcycles - and that starts with where we keep them. Many riders don't have the luxury of a garage or shed to keep their bike in, but need a solution to keep it clean, dry and out of sight. One such solution is the Armadillo motorcycle shelter.

It comes in three separate sizes and features a ride-in, ride-out design, allowing you to simly pull the metal frame (fitted with 1 600D waterproof cover) up and over to help keep your bike safe from the elements and prying eyes. HOT STUFF

The latest and greatest biking kit

DGUARD ECALL SYSTEM

£499

www.dguard.com

This nifty piece of kit is, according to the manufacturer, the world's first eCall system for motorcycles, and if you're worried about coming off your bike when riding alone, or the security of your pride and joy, then it's going to be of interest to you.

Once installed, the device is ready to roll and it offers two primary functions which both sound desirable. The first being a crash detection system service which uses advanced sensors to detect if the motorcycle, and more importantly the rider, has been involved in an accident. In the event of an off, Dguard will phone the emergency services in the country that you're riding in (it currently works anywhere in the EU, with the exception of the Netherlands due to laws about automatic calls being placed to the emergency services), and reel off an automated message explaining that you're down, providing GPS co-ordinates so that you can be found. Along with this automatic detection, an SOS button is installed on your handlebars which will allow you to call emergency services if another rider is involved in a collision. If you accidentally press it you can cancel the call with a few more presses of the button.

The second feature is that the Dguard can also function as an anti-theft device. Link the sensor to your phone via the official app, and you'll get an alert when your bike is moved, along with GPS co-ordinates so that you can track it down.

At £499, the Dguard device can only be installed at certified retailers, ensuring that it's correctly fitted, set up and well positioned, but there are plenty of stockists around the country. For your money, you'll also get two years subscription to the SIM service (essentially a phone contract that allows you to call the emergency services and send data), after that there's a small annual fee to continue using the system (which is less than £30), a small price to pay for peace of mind.

EIGO WATERPROOF BACK PACK

Tested by: Nick Mowbray

RRP: £59.95 // Colours: Black, Fluo

There's only so much you can say about a backpack - but the Eigo Waterproof Back Pack deserves a special mention - partly for its ability to hold up in some seriously severe weather, and partly because its excellent value for money when you look at the other bike bags on the market.

It features hi-visibility fluorescent yelow panels, combined with printed reflective details, which help to make the rucksack (and you) visible out on the road - which is particularly valiuable if the weather does take a turn. And if it does, you can rest assured that the Eigo Waterproof Back Pack is going to keep your clobber bone dry in a downpour, thanks to its TPU exterior, roll down top and welded seams. There's also an external zip up compartment which is storm proof.

It's really comfortable too - adjustable padded shoulder straps, a waist and chest belt, and back padding lifting the backpack away from your body, and distributing the weight evenly across your back.

In short, this 30 litre capacity back pack is perfect for all year round riding - and coming in just shy of £60, it offers comparatively great value for money too.

Rust Online Mag - W2 E-MX-8 Boots Review

WITH MY TCXS still sodden from the previous day, Alex selflessly offered me his brand new W2 E-MX-8 boots to try. I, quite literally, grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

The initial fit felt better than my own boots, and as a fairly basic design, with plastic buckles and a predominantly 'microfibre leather' construction they felt lighter, too. Of course, this is largely because they offer less protection... but at a smidgen over £180 they are half the price!

For a relatively budget boot - they're in the same market position as say Aplinestars Tech 3 - the only niggle I could find in eight hours of riding was that the moulded sole isn't quite as grippy as it could be, both on the pegs and on the trail. On the plus side, with one extra buckle (four) over the Tech 3s you can get a better fit around the ankle.

W2 are an Italian brand and they've been around decades now (since 1985), so for the price you're getting a devent level of quality and reputation.

If you want more quality you can upgrade to their MX-9 or Unadilla boots (both feature stitched soles).

www.bikeittrade.com can tell you where to find them (in the UK), and Alex will be back to report on how they stand up to long-term abuse. He might want to fumigate them first, mind...

On Two Wheels - dguard review

LIFE-SAVING TECHNOLOGY?

The world's first motorcycle eCall system

German electronics giant, digades GmbH, has rolled out the world's first eCall system across Europe. eCall technology is a European initiative that aims to bring rapid assistance to motorists involved in collisions anywhere in the EU.

The dguard eCall system utilises sophisticated sensor technology to detect a crash and contact the emergency services in seconds. The sensor is a sophisticated bit of kit and works a bit like a magnetic field, detecting a rider's presence (or lack of it) on the bike. The emergency services are given an automated spoken message, with the GPS co-ordinates of the accident. If the injured rider is wearing a Bluetooth headset and is able to speak, then the dguard will connect the emergency call directly.

There's a Deutsch Mobile Sim built into the module - on a roaming data contract, so it'll connect to whichever provider is offering the strongest signal (which should minimise the risk of being caught out in a dead spot, without a signal). It functions throughout Europe, with the exception of the Netherlands (due to a law which does not currently permit automated calls to be made to emergency services) and it's capable of automatically communicating in 18 individual languages.

It also comes with a handlebar-mounted SOS button, which allows a rider to call the emergency services for another person. Importantly, an inadvertently-placed emergency call can be stopped within 15 seconds by pressing the button twice (or more).

To ensure that the dguard can reliably distinguish an accident digades undertook three years of research and development, doing over 50,000 miles of testing in multiple countries.

The manufacturer also had to ensure that the device would continue to operate even under the most extreme conditions - and undertook crash tests at speeds of 60mph. The unit is housed in an aramid case that is capable of withstanding 300G of force, so digades is confident that it is capable of withstanding a crash at higher speeds too.

It costs £499 for the unit, SOS button, app and two years' SIM subscription - but fitting will cost around £50, depending on type of the bike and sensor location.

Dguard e-call system £499.99

Tested by: Dan Sutherland
Time tested: 2500 miles

What's good? I was fortunate enough to test the very first road-going dguard emergency call system in the UK. Fortunately, I have not been able to test the bike's ability to independently call for help in the event of an accident, but I have grown to be quite dependant on the system for the security of my bike. When you install the product, you create an account using a handy mobile app, which doubles up as a remote to control the sensitivity of the in-built security sensor. The is very intuitive and makes creating your perfect personal security settings a doddle! I was worried that the dguard unit would look bulky and obvious and spoil the look of my Kawasaki ZX-6R and so I was pleasantly surprised to find the only obvious trace of it being fitted was the SOS button on the top yoke.

What's not? If the system detects unauthorised movement, it will send a notification to your phone. If you forget to switch this off and take it somewhere where it is likely to move a lot (a garage for example), your phone is then spammed with alerts to tell you your bike has apprently been stolen.

Airoh ST 701 Helmet

Reviewer: Ross

Italian helmet manufacturer Airoh has long been a stalwart of the off-road world, producing top quality helmets that have been keeping dirt enthusiasts safe for many years - but the firm's range of road helmets has only just made it across to British shores, so I got my hands on a new Airoh ST 701 ACU Gold approved full face helmet to see how well it help up.

It's undoubtedly a good looking helmet and I've received many compliments and answered many questions about this latest offering on my more recent travels. The outer shell is made up of a multi-axial system and uses mostly carbon fibre, so it's pretty light-weight (about 1400g) - one of the lightest when taking into account price and technical specification. The EPS inner shell has been subjected to some pretty intense testing, with the use of four different densities guaranteeing the highest safety standards (according to Airoh and the ACU).

It features evolved aerodynamics and a pretty impressive three-pronged internal ventilation system - plus an additional nose defector to push air and humidity down and out of the helmet.

There's also an internal drop-down retractable sun visor, and a quick release Pinlock anti-fog racing visor (pretty much impossible to fog-up and complemented by a really wide field of vision).

The helmet comes in two different shell sizes - to ensure the best fit. All inner lining materials are hypoallergenic, fully removable and washable. Designed for both sports and touring use, it's as comfortable on the track as it was taking-on some (admittedly light) trails in deepest, darkest regions of Lincolnshire.

It's a really well-equipped helmet that can stand side-by-side with more more expensive kit. It's phenomenally light, feels really well balanced once on and cuts through the air with very little turbulence - and being ACU Gold approved, it's pretty much guaranteed to keep you safe.

BUYING GUIDE

Kit yourself out for summer

When the sun starts shining, we love getting out on our bikes and scooters - but with British weather unpredictable as ever, we've teamed up with Bike It to bring you this brief budget buying guide...

Now, we're not saying go out and buy a new kit especially for summer, at On2Wheels we fully appreciate that not everyone has the bank balance to do that - but when you're looking for new gear, it's worth considering the features on it which will make it suitable all year round.

Jackets & trousers

Does it have ventilation zips? Some jackets and trousers have ventilation on the arms and the body of the jacket - the more air that can be circulated through your jacket and expelled through the back, the cooler you'll be when riding.

Take out your thermal linings - we know it sounds like a no-brainer and super obvious, but you'd be amazed at the number of people who ride with their thermal liners still in their gear, unaware that you can take them out.

Have a look in your existing jacket and trousers and take them out or if you're looking at buying new, then make sure this is something on your wish list.

Look for breathable on the label - are they made from a breathable fabric or once you zip yourself in is nothing getting out?

Do they have ventilation or mesh sections? Is the ventilation adjustable? Some boots have plastic openers that you can close up in the cooler months and open in the summer. Mesh boots are breathable throughout and perfect for summer.

Take a look at the length - there are plenty of boots out there and lots of choices of length. You might want to opt for a shorter boot during the summer - but be sure not to trade ankle protection...

Gloves

Invest in a pair of summer gloves - if there's one piece of kit which you'll notice the biggest difference in during the summer months, it will be gloves.

Lightweight and breathable materials - summer gloves don't have to be waterproof or contain thermal linings and as a result are often lightweight. They're nice and thin but still protective and don't forget to make sure they're made fom abrasion resistant materials.

Take a look at the different lengths of glove on offer - it might be that you prefer a shorter glove so that there's less material around your wrists so you can feel the breeze.

Helmets

Can you change the visor easily? Does it come with a tinted visor to help shield your eyes from the sun on those really sunny days? If you're heading out on a long trip, make sure you take a clear visor with you as once the sun goes down you could struggle to see...

Is there an integrated sun visor? Some helmets have flip-down internal sun visors which are really great in summer - as you can simply flick it down and your eyes are protected by a tinted shield.

Is it well ventilated? It's pretty obvious that a helmet with plenty of ventilation is a sensible choice for the summer months - and you'll really feel the benefit when you're out on the road and the intake vents are pulling in fresh air and the hot air is being removed at the back.

Sweat and salt can make the inside of your helmet pretty unpleasant, so make sure to air it out after every ride by storing it with the visor open and if you can, take out the linings to wash them. Some helmets also have breathable linings which stop moisture being soaked in.

"Ultimately, I would wholeheartedly recommend the new Airoh ST 701 helmet."

Italian helmet manufacturer Airoh has long since been stalwarts of the off-road world, with its top quality helmets keeping dirt enthusiasts safe for many years - but its fantastic range of road helmets has only just made it across to British shores, so I got my hands on a new Airoh ST 701 ACU Gold approved full face helmet to see how well it held up.

The Airoh ST 701 is undoubtedly a good looking helmet - I opted for one in red, white and blue - and I've received many compliments, and answered many questions about the latest offering from Airoh on my more recent travels.

Now, let's get down to the specifics. The outer shell is made up of a multi-axial system and uses mostly carbon-fibre, so it's pretty light-weight (about 1400 grams) - one of the lightest when taking into account both price and technical specification, in fact. In addition, the EPS inner shell has been subjected to some pretty intense testing, with the use of four different densities guaranteeing the highest safety standards (according to Airoh and the ACU).

It features evolved aerodynamics and a pretty impressive three-pronged internal ventilation system - plus an additional nose deflector to push air humidity down and out of the helmet. There's also an internal drop down retractable sun visor, and a quick release Pinlock anti-fog racing visor (which is pretty much impossible to fog up, and is complemented by a really wide field of vision.

The helmet comes in two different shell sizes - to ensure the best fit, no matter the size of your head. While all inner linings are hypoallergenic, fully removable and washable.

Designed for both sports and touring use, this helmet was as comfortable on the track as it was taking on some (admittedly light) trails in deepest, darkest Lincolnshire. Yes, it comes in at just (and only just) under £400 - but it's a really well equipped helmet that can stand side by side with much more expensive kit. It is phenomenally light, feels really well balanced once on, and cuts through the air with very little turbulence - and with being ACU Gold approved, it is pretty much guaranteed to keep you safe.

Ultimately, I would wholeheartedly recommend the new Airoh ST 701 helmet.

Liqui Moly race-ready lubricants arrive in the UK

If you're into modern motorcycle racing, you've probably heard of Liqui Moly. It is Europe's leading motor oil manufacturer, a global lubrication powerhouse, and official partner of the Moto2 and Moto3 - and their top quality motorcycle products are finally available to buy in the UK.

Who are Liqui Moly?

Founded in Germany in 1957, where its products are still developed and manufactured, Liqui Moly is a globally renowned manufacturer of premium quality lubricants, motor oils, additives, vehicle care products, chemical repair tools, service products, glues and sealants.

Liqui Moly claims that its products are perfect for use at home, in professional workshops, or for industrial use - and the company is confident that its high performance products products lengthen the service life of motors and aggregates, ensuring that they will go on performing just as they should for years to come.

And Dorna thought that made the firm a perfect partner for the world's fastest motorcycle racing championship, MotoGP.

Liqui Moly - race-ready lubricants arrive in the UK

Liqui Moly and MotoGP

When the lights go off at the start of a race, it's not (just) the best start that counts in the battle for the podium, but the best overall performance. Man and machine must be able to cooperate in absolute harmony if they are to be successful at the highest level of racing - and the use of top quality lubricants make that cooperation a little bit easier.

In 2015, Liqui Moly joined forces with the FIM MotoGP World Championship, as the Exclusive Lubricant Supplier to Moto2 and Moto3 (an agreement which runs through to 2020). This season (as in previous years) all teams will use the same 'Made in Germany' motor oil, a commercially available Motorbike 4T Synth 5W-40 Street Race. The fact that the oil is eminently suitable for both top level racing and general consumer use, is surely a testament to the very high quality of product that Liqui Moly turns out.

Peter Baumann, marketing director at Liqui Moly said: "We're proud to see our brand related to the most interesting and exciting events in global motorsports and it's also a great feeling seeing all Moto2 and Moto3-teams of the FIM MotoGP World Championship using our products in and on their bikes."

While Pau Serracanta, managing director, commercial area at Dorna Sports added: "We are proud to contimue our relationship with a company such as Liqui Moly, who are a global player in providing one of the most important yet unseen aspects of top level competition."

And that's not all either; Liqui Moly is also involved with the IntactGP team, whose riders Sandro Cortese and Marcel Schrotter race in Moto2 under the Liqui Moly banner, while making use of the extensive range of top notch products available to them. And in North America Liqui Moly sponsors both the National MotoAmerica Racing Series and the Canadian Superbike Championship Series.

So no matter what you need, be it engine and gear oils, oil and fuel additives, chemical problem solvers, service products and special lubricants, everything you might conceivably require to keep your pride and joy in the best possible condition and performing exactly as you need it to is available from a single source - Liqui Moly. And with their commitment to racing, you can guarantee you're going to get some top level tech.

BikeTek TOP BOX SWALLOWS IT ALL

April 2017

BikeTek Top Box Swallows It All

Tested by: Alison Silcox, Office Manager and centre of the MCN universe

Time tested: 700 miles/four months

What's good? I love my top box! There I've said it and feel much better that it's out in the open. This 48-litre box looks vast perched on the rear of my Honda SH125 but having so much space makes life easy on my daily commute. It swallows up lunch, gym kit and laptop with ease plus, once off the scooter, I can stow my own lid and gloves plus a friend's.

When loaded it doesn't impact on the handling of the bike, even after a visit to the local supermarket to top up on vital supplies (wine)! There's a reflective strip covering a large area, that improves my visibility and it gives me great peace of mind. The lid fits securely and is completely water tight, even in the wettest of winter storms. The locking mechanism is sturdy an it comes with a spare key, just in case.
the box is a universal fit and comes complete with all the necessary fitments.

What's not? I really struggle to find fault with this piece of kit, if I did want to be picky it could do with a little netted section to secure loose items or keep liquids upright.

RiDE review: BikeTek Front Head Stand

April 2017

MCN BikeTek Front head stand review

This stand locates into the headstock, which will allow more jobs to be done, like removing forks for example. It’s easy to assemble, well-finished and comes with several pins to fit a range of bikes. Using the right pin is essential, but it does lift the bike easily. It’s not the highest stand here, but it does get the bike up to a useful height. Once it’s on the stand, it’s pretty stable, though there is a bit more movement than on some of the others here. It’s a well-finished product, with plastic wheels that worked well enough on both surfaces.

Construction: Powder-coated stainless steel tube, plastic wheels
